Riversdale, NZ

This is an exercise in re-thinking what you really need to create a place at the beach. The main structure is designed to provide shelter from the wind, heat and sometimes - rain. It’s all very utilitarian - no linings; no cavity cladding; no exterior walls or windows. The kitchen and ablutions spaces are behind sliding panels which are opened up during occupation. The remainder is effectively a covered deck with canvas “walls” (by Dwights Outdoors) that can be opened up to a greater or lesser degree depending on wind direction. The roof over the deck is a warm span structure (by Viking) that is essentially a free spanning metal roof with polyiso insulation and membrane on top - it’s designed to take the sting out of the mid-summer sun and has no requirement for roof framing. It also provides a great surface for uplighting at night via LED strips concealed in the driftwood sticks suspended below the ceiling.

If the nights should get a bit chilly, there is an open biofuel fire (by Naked Flame) to keep everyone warm.

Sleeping accommodation is provided by the lotus Belle tents that will be left up from October through to April.

Landscaping and planting will be completed by summer 2021. stand by for more photos then.
